Vintage Railway-Style Posters: A New Way to Celebrate Huntee Trails

I’ve been working on something a bit different for Huntee lately, a series of vintage railway-inspired posters celebrating our digital trails.

The first poster created was the picturesque market town of Stokesley (one of my personal favourite trails), these designs pay homage to those iconic mid-20th century travel posters that once adorned railway stations across Britain.

The response to this first design has been quite overwhelming, with many requests for prints. Well, I’ve got some good news…

I’ve decided to make these available as free downloads rather than selling them. While there’s been a lot of work that’s gone into these – from exploring the area in person, to training an AI generation model with the right aesthetic, then making numerous post-production edits, and finally designing the surrounding poster elements – I’m not entirely comfortable selling them as products just incase anyone assumes I’ve manually painted these by hand.

If you’re interesed in seeing how these artwork and posters re made I’ve outlined the process on my personal website.

The railway-poster series

These designs pay homage to the iconic railway posters of the mid-20th century that once adorned stations across Britain, inviting travelers to explore new destinations. I’ve combined the nostalgic teal/yellow Huntee color palette with the distinctive style of those vintage travel advertisements to create something that I hope captures both the spirit of adventure and the unique character of each location.
Stokesley marks the beginning of this series, with its picturesque bridge, flowing water, and charming architecture making it the perfect first subject. The response to these initial designs has been incredible, with many of you asking if they’ll be available as prints!

What Are Huntee trails?

For those not yet familiar, Huntee offers digital treasure hunts that transform ordinary walks into engaging adventures. Each trail uses a question-and-answer format to guide you through local points of interest, with:

  • Bite-sized “did-you-knows” about local history and heritage
  • A scoring system that adds a bit of friendly competition
  • Optional helpers if you get stuck
  • All playable on any smartphone – no app download required!

Our trails typically range from 2-5km and take about a couple of hours to complete, making them perfect for families, friends, or solo explorers looking to experience locations in a more meaningful way.

Behind the design process

Creating these posters involved blending elements of traditional railway poster art with modern design techniques. I started by capturing what makes each location special, then represented those elements in the simplified, bold style characteristic of vintage travel posters.

I’ve combined the nostalgic teal/yellow Huntee colour palette with the distinctive style of those vintage advertisements to create something that hopefully captures both the spirit of adventure and the unique character of each location.

If you’re curious about the more technical aspects of the process (including techniques and inspiration), I’ve written a more detailed breakdown on my personal website.

To download your poster:

These posters are available as free PDF downloads to all Huntee users. Why free? Because I believe in sharing the love of local exploration and want these designs to inspire more people to get out and discover these amazing locations.
To download your poster:

  • Log in to your Huntee account (or create one if you’re new)
  • Select the poster you’d like from our artwork section and download the high-resolution PDF

I’m asking users to log in for downloads so I can keep track of how many people are enjoying these resources, grow our community of explorers, and make sure you receive notifications when new posters are added to the series.

While these posters are offered as a free resource, if you’d like to support the continuation of this series and the development of more Huntee trails, there’s an optional caffeine fund link where you can contribute a small amount.

What’s Next?

We’ll be adding more locations to the Railway Poster Series over the coming months. Stay tuned for more creative ways to celebrate the places we love to explore, and happy hunting.
