Hutton Rudby, TS15 0DA
Walk closer to this point to reveal a question.
Look for a carved stone marker on the house to the right of the church. What is the name of the house? (two words)
The current Methodist Church was built in 1879 and cost £838 to construct. It replaced an older church which was then "in a worn out condition". Photo: Hutton Rudby and District Local History Society (approx 1900).
What year can be seen carved above the cottage door?
It has been said that this house was once a pub, possibly called the William IV. It certainly used to have a fine sandstone cellar. Photo: Mrs Bell (date unknown)
How many names are listed on the memorial in memory of those who gave their lives?
The War Memorial is located at the top of Hutton Rudby's second, smaller, village green of North End. Photo: Hutton Rudby and District Local History Society
How many miles does the signpost indicate are between here and Yarm?
Some people used to wrongly believe that this is called Doctors Lane because medical men from Northallerton would only come as far as this lane to find out what was happening in the village at the time of the cholera outbreak in the 1830's.
Look for another old signpost. How many miles away is the village of Potto?
The village hall was built in 1927 on land donated to the village by Mrs Mary Young Blair. It was one of the earliest and finest village halls in the country. In 2004 the hall underwent a series of extensive improvements. Photo: Joyce Walker (showing the hall in 1998).
What are the two initials on the top of the post box?
The meaning of the name Enterpen is not known; it may refer to the pinfold (pound) where stray animals were kept until their owners paid to get them back. Before the railway there were stables in Enterpen for up to 50 pack mules, who carried linen cloth made in the village mill to market.
How many miles are there between your location and Carlton village?
The building nearest the old signpost was formerly a school. In the photo you can see the students playing outside, possibly in the 1940s. Photo: Hutton Rudby and District Local History Society
Which two words can be found on the green sign (next the wooden gate) by the fence to your left to your left?
At the beginning of the 20th century the River Leven (which you will shortly walk along) was much deeper than it is today. Children would swim in the river at Sexhow, and herons and otters were common. Photo: Hutton Rudby and District Local History Society
How many arches are in the bridge?
400 years ago the original bridge across the river stood a little to the east and was made of wood. This stone bridge was built in 1755 at a cost of £150. It was a narrow bridge and in 1972 was widened to the full width of the road. Photo: Hutton Rudby and District Local History Society (July 1923).
Look for a large stone memorial plaque mounted on the church wall, to the left of the main entrance. How many 'deservedly beloved sisters' are memorialised by this stone?
The position of the church in a river valley rather than on a hill top is unusual. Some have suggested that it was built here by the Meynell family in mid-12th century to be shared by the villages of Rudby and Hutton. Photo: Hutton Rudby and District Local History Society (repairs in 1923)
During the 1850's the mill was converted to produce linen from what?
For many years there was at the bottom of Hutton Bank a large Mill with a tall chimney and warehouses. There were cottages standing close to the road, where for a time the village policeman lived. The Mill worked from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Photo: Hutton Rudby and District Local History Society
Look by the sandstone entranceway to the property and find the name of the building with the distinctive tower (two words)
Originally owned by the Rudby & Skutterskelfe estate it is believed to have been the home of the Rev Richard Shepherd & family. The tower was added in the 1880's by Allan Bowes Wilson who rebuilt and altered the house. Towers were very much in fashion at the time locally. Photo: Maurice Atkinson
The pump was installed to commemorate which event? (one word)
For a short while after the War (at about the time of Stokesley Fair) a circus was held on the Green. It was quite a small circus, but one year it brought "The Biggest Rat In The World", and there once was an elephant. Photo: Hutton Rudby and District Local History Society
Look in the bottom left corner for the engraved foundation stone. In which month in 1887 was the stone laid?
On the Green below Church House was a well, which can sometimes be made out on old photographs. Photo Hutton Rudby and District Local History Society (a wedding in 1936)
