Fairy Dell was originally the gardens and grounds belonging to Gunnergate Hall which was built in 185. Today the site is a 42 acre park consisting of natural woodland, parkland, an ornamental lake, and a flood defence lake.
Did you know that excavations found the Fairy Dell trod to be up to 3 meters deep in places? This suggests it's been used for hundreds of years. We will follow the oldest trod/path from here down to the bridge over the beck.
The Medieval Period is generally considered to be between 1066 (Normal Conquest) and 1535 (Henry V!!!'s reformation of the church). Newham was originally a Medieval village, now lost, and forms the suburb of Coulby Newham.
Gunnergate Hall had three lodges but only two survive, Hunter’s Lodge (pictured) on Gunnergate Lane and High Lodge on Tollesby Lane. Hunters Lodge is similar in design to the former Hall, with its stone dressings and chimney stacks, wheras High Lodge has been much altered.
Did you know that birds originally descended from reptiles? The oldest known bird is known as the Archaeopteryx and lived approximately147 million years ago. Check out the Fairy Dell Herald information board nearby for more information about birds in Fairy Dell.
Fairy Dell's lake is man-made. The present Fairy Dell park was developed and planeted by Middlesbrough Council in 1990. It was later transformed in 2005 with help from Big Lottery funding.
Originally these formed a bench. There are two other benches carved from a fallen oak from the grounds of Fairy Dell.
There are over 500 known species of oak extant today. The English oak is the second most common tree species in the UK (after Birch), it grows between 20-40 metres tall, and can live up to 1,000 years.
If you're lucky you may see a heron on your adventure today. Herons are long-legged freshwater and coastal birds in the family Ardeidae, and there are 64 recognised species.
Fairy Dell's wooded valley is mostly made up of native trees. There are more than 60,000 species of tree around the world and England has around 60 are native the the UK, the most common being Birch, Oaak, Beech, Alder, Hazel, and Hawthorne.

The Marton West Beck begins just south of Marton and flows through Fairy Dell before reaching the lake in Albert Park. The lake at Fairy Dell is one part of an extensive flood defence system across Middlesbrough.
