Easby Moor is a hill located within the North York Moors. It stands at 324 metres above sea level with a monument to Captin James Cook at it's peak.

During the Second World War an aeroplane crashed near this spot, caused by ice forming on its wings. At 4:10am. on 11 February 1940 an aircraft took off from Thornaby airfield to search for German Minesweepers. The crash killed three of the crew, with a fourth survivng despite his injuries.
The monument is 60 metres high and was built in 1827 by Robert Campion, a Whitby banker. In 1895 the monument was restored by repointing and the fitting of a lightening condutor. Unfortunately the condustor was stolen, resulting in a lightening strike in 1960 that split the monument, since repaired.
"Owyhee" is an early spelling for the word Hawaii. The great English explorer and navigator Captain James Cook was killed by natives of Hawaii during his third visit to the Pacific island group.
