The monument is 60 metres high and was built in 1827 by Robert Campion, a Whitby banker. In 1895 the monument was restored by repointing and the fitting of a lightening condutor. Unfortunately the condustor was stolen, resulting in a lightening strike in 1960 that split the monument, since repaired.
